The Information Technology (IT) department at Pew takes a proactive approach toward the use of new technologies to increase the organization's capacity for exceptionally high-quality, strategic philanthropy. Executive staff at Pew recognizes the importance of technology and supports related initiatives to advance the institution's goals and achieve and maintain a leadership position in the philanthropic community. The department comprises highly competent, forward-thinking professionals who are responsible for the technology needs of all Pew staff, as well as for Pew's subsidiaries in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. IT is organized into distinct areas of responsibility, including strategic alignment of technology with the business, the evaluation and acquisition of software and hardware, implementation of new systems and data repositories, and providing support for the extended network, desktop computer hardware, and software applications.
The Principal Associate, Network Engineer is a senior technical expert responsible for leading the design and operation of Pew's wide and local area networks. The position is part of the Infrastructure Operations group which manages all on-premises, hosted or cloud infrastructure. The Principal Associate position requires knowledge in specialized technologies, such as network architecture, routing and switching protocols, Firewall and load balancing, communication circuits, VOIP, VPN, wireless and security technologies. Ultimately, this position contributes to the larger responsibility of the Infrastructure Operations unit to ensure the alignment of Pew's technology strategy and priorities with the goals and objectives of the organization.
The Principal Associate reports to the Associate Manager, Network Engineering.
- Implement and manage Pew's converged voice, video and data network infrastructure.
- Manage network devices (routing, switching, load balancing, WAN acceleration, VPN, and Firewalls) for wired and wireless networks in a multi-office, global setting.
- Design and implement automated management and monitoring of the infrastructure and services Pew uses. Provide metrics and performance reports with respect to each service.
- Lead network projects, including coordinating across the broader IT and vendor resources and stakeholders.
- Exercise broad latitude for independent judgement.
- Serve as a technical expert and one of the highest levels of escalation for network and security issues.
- Implement and maintain wireless and wired security.
- Respond to audits and support periodic penetration tests.
- Perform planning, risk assessment, and documentation following procedures, best practices, and ensuring network availability.
- Perform analysis of network performance and planning and summarize the results for varying audiences, from technical partners through to senior-level management.
- Maintain network systems by managing product and capabilities roadmaps; establishing and following maintenance procedures; and working with vendors and other staff to perform regular maintenance.
- Manage configurations and the deployment of network in compliance with established business practices.
- Recommend technical solutions that will enhance performance, increase redundancy, and add flexibility to the existing infrastructure.
- Participate in DR planning and testing, ie circuit failovers; updating commented disaster-scenario Firewall rules and network contingencies; creating isolated networks for periodic DR tests.
- Work with outside expert-level network, voice, and data contracting firms to complete complex projects.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required.
- A minimum of six years of relevant and specialized network engineering experience demonstrating increasing levels of responsibility and technical expertise in a corporate enterprise environment.
- Demonstrated experience as a project lead, including coordinating across IT, vendor and stakeholders.
- Demonstrated in-depth experience with on premise network infrastructure, specifically Cisco wireless and wired networks and protocols; routing, and switching.
- Demonstrated experience with Next Generation Firewalls.
- Understanding of ISP and WAN connection technologies and experience working with telecommunications/communications carriers.
- General understanding of systems, including Microsoft networking (replication, trusts, GPOs, etc.); hypervisors (VMware), Citrix NetScalers, and storage.
- Experience maintaining connections for Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), and other hosted, or cloud systems such as Okta, Office 365, Salesforce, Workday, etc.
- Experience with infrastructure monitoring (Netflow; network configuration management; performance monitoring and dashboards).
- Full understanding of DNS, domain registrations and SSL Certificates.
- Possess a solid grasp of items related to datacenter management (power, UPS management; cooling, fault tolerance, cascade failure scenarios, rack layout and cable management, etc.).
- Skilled at documenting designs and policies associated with network infrastructure.
- Ability to coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously and be a strong project lead, both with the internal team, and with the broader Pew staff, and external vendors and partners.
- Able to set priorities, organize time and identify resources for projects.
- Strong trouble-shooting skills.
- Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills with the ability to present information in a compelling, polished and persuasive manner.
- Cisco, Microsoft, or security certifications.
- Unified Communication experience.
Occasional travel required between Pew's main Philadelphia and Washington, DC offices, and smaller remote offices. Minimal additional travel required to attend trainings, seminars or conferences.
