Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists and recommends ideas in the development of procedures and processes to increase efficiency and raise the level of services, while maintaining consistency in how work is performed in (field of management).
  • Prepares, analyzes and presents reports to management and supervisors to help strategically evaluate, provide material for understanding the effects the division has on the organization and measure performance.
  • Administers the SCADA System and trains operators on the use of the system.
  • Maintains the Engineering Analysis (EA) model and associated protection databases.
  • Monitors and directs power quality activities. Makes inspections, performs analysis of data and makes corrective recommendations on power quality problems.
  • Ensures distribution system sectionalizing protection and coordination.
  • Assures that all substations and line apparatus are properly installed, programmed, and maintained.
  • Assists in the short- and long-range organizational planning, directing, policy-making, and problem solving involved in the effective management of the electric cooperative.
  • Assists in developing Cooperative policies and procedures relating to engineering design, construction, and maintenance methods to ensure adequate system performance in conformance with policies and requirements of the Cooperative and government directives.
  • Remains knowledgeable of regulatory and safety requirements in related areas and innovations in the fields of power system engineering, metering, substation and apparatus.


  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering required. One to two years of progressively responsible experience in electric utility planning and design of substations, distribution lines, apparatus and system protection is preferred.
  • Experience in utility construction contract negotiations, electrical equipment specifications and operations, communications, relaying, metering, rates and budgeting preferred.
  • Effective working knowledge of utility system planning including long range plan, yearly work plans, power requirement studies, sectionalizing studies, financial forecast (engineering), loan applications (engineering), load forecasting, budgets, engineering analysis programs, power supply, load management, supervisory control, outage management systems, etc. preferred.
  • Knowledge in the design and construction of distribution power lines and substations, other distributions facilities such as capacitor installations, regulator structures, sectionalizing and relay systems and coordination, construction contracts, electric utility construction standards, meter installations, inventory methods and system mapping preferred.
  • Working knowledge of electrical apparatus such as power transformers, oil circuit breakers, regulators, reclosers, capacitors, meter installations and relays, etc. preferred.
  • Knowledge of material and work order practices, National Electric Safety Code, OSHA, F.E.R.C. regulations, and "Joint Use" contracts preferred.
  • Must be able to perform field inspections outside a regular office environment.
  • Possess a working knowledge of Microsoft programs and other software applications pertinent to the Cooperative's system (Microsoft Access, Excel, Word, and Windows operating system).
  • Must be able to interact well with internal and external customers, handling inquiries and solving problems. Conveys professional interaction at all times, thereby maintaining positive relations. Displays and encourages team effort for maximum efficiency and productivity.
  • Maintains working relationships with industry affiliations, local, state, and federal associations, other cooperatives, vendors and consultants, including civic organizations.
  • This position requires the availability of the employee during bad weather or unusual conditions for all times of the day and night as well as on weekends to assist in restoration of service during system outages and emergencies.
  • Maintains thorough working knowledge of Cooperative Bylaws, policies, procedures, and safety manual.
  • Must be able to attend periodic seminars, training programs, conferences, civic and professional events.
  • Must hold a valid Alabama driver's license at the level necessary to operate vehicles in the performance of position responsibilities.

Physical Demands

Frequently operates standard office machines to include computer, copy machine, and fax. Frequent standing, walking, with access to awkward positions necessary. Normal work environment is 75% indoor and 25% outdoors. Occasionally lifts up to 25 pounds.
