International E-Waste Design Competition Website: www.ewaste.illinois.edu Team’s School(s) California State University at Long Beach Project Description: The re:use system deals with electronic waste on a community level. It is an organization of designers, engineers, construction managers, and urban planners that communicates with city officials and with the regional community to safely recycle consumer electronic excess and waste for use in public projects. This system creates a closed cycle that allows for the proper disposal, awareness, and discussion of e-waste as well as solutions to community needs. If this system were established in the city of Long Beach, the cycle would begin with a resident discarding a broken electronic product, such as a printer, in one of many conveniently designed e-waste bins located throughout the city. These bins would be picked up and sent to an e-waste recycling facility, where the printer would be stripped of its basic materials, such as aluminum and ABS plastic. Once the materials were separated and accumulated, they would be reprocessed and remanufactured for a public project. re:use Long Beach would then work with the community and with city officials to request calls for city projects based on broken infrastructure and residential needs and suggestions.
